The Italian authority has recently issued the LEGISLATIVE DECREE 3 September 2020, n. 116 Implementation of directive (EU) 2018/851 amending directive 2008/98 / EC relating to waste and implementation of directive (EU) 2018/852 amending directive 1994/62 / EC on packaging and packaging waste.

The Legislative Decree introduces new requirements on the disposal information to be reported on the label of several product categories, including healthcare products. These requirements apply primarily to suppliers of packaging materials; however, even who “uses the packaging” (i.e. the company that owns the finished product) must take this obligation into consideration before placing the product on the market.

According to the available information the above requirements should not apply to drug products.

However these requirements  apply to medical devices, food supplements and cosmetics, therefore companies are suggested to check with their suppliers of packaging materials the compliance of the packaging materials with the aforementioned decree.
